Additional Rebuke of Disciples
But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
The extra rebuke in does not appear in earlier manuscripts, which is why it is excluded in the NIV and ESV. Its later insertion highlights how scribes introduced additional moral instructions. Recognizing this challenges the assumption that the Gospels were handed down intact, revealing editorial influences that shaped the portrayal of Jesus and his teachings.
THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
Though absent in early manuscripts, the rebuke reflects Jesus’ merciful ethos. Scribes may have included a known oral tradition or a marginal note to illuminate Jesus’ stance against retaliation. It doesn’t alter doctrine but makes explicit a core Christian value.
THE ISLAMIC POSITION
This addition alters Jesus' interaction with his disciples, reshaping the narrative and reflecting scribes' willingness to insert teachings into Jesus’ words rather than preserving the original text. Such liberties challenge the reliability of the Gospel’s authenticity and raise a critical question: can we freely add to the "Words of God" without compromising their integrity?
