Avoiding Idolatry
You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything... you shall not bow down to them nor serve them...
[An-Nahl - 36]
﴿ وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٖ رَّسُولًا أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّٰغُوتَۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ هَدَى ٱللَّهُ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ حَقَّتۡ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةُۚ فَسِيرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُواْ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴾ [النحل - ٣٦]
[An-Nahl - 36] And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc.i. e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah)." Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).
This passage is relevant because it establishes that pure, image-free worship was a biblical mandate as well. Islam’s prohibition of graven images is not a departure, but a reaffirmation of God’s original directive. By highlighting this similarity, Muslims illustrate that Islamic teachings restore and uphold an ancient principle of unadulterated monotheistic worship.
