Love Your Neighbor

Mark 12:31

The Tension
PASSAGE AMark 12:31
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

[An-Nisāʼ - 36]

[An-Nisāʼ - 36] Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful;

Analysis

This is relevant because it affirms a core moral tenet that both traditions embrace. By connecting the Quran’s similar emphasis to the Bible’s directive, Muslims clarify that the principle of loving one’s neighbor isn’t unique to Christianity. Instead, it’s part of an unbroken moral tradition. This insight helps Muslims show that Islam doesn’t stand apart as morally alien but weaves into the same ethical tapestry God has revealed through earlier scriptures.
